25th Anniversary: TfL Invites young Londoners to record special announcements
Transport for London (TfL) is celebrating its 25th anniversary by inviting young transport enthusiasts to take part in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. TfL is searching for 25 ‘superfans’ aged 5 to 16 to record special anniversary station announcements and go behind the scenes of London’s iconic transport network.
The competition is open to any child who has a passion for London’s transport, whether it’s a favourite bus route, Tube line, or even the Cycleway they use every weekend. To enter, participants must submit 100 words explaining why they love their chosen mode of transport—perhaps it’s the Overground line that takes them to see their grandparents or the bus route they rely on for football matches. Winners, selected by TfL staff, will have the chance to record their own personalised station announcement celebrating TfL’s 25th anniversary, which will be played at select stations across the city.
In addition to their voice being heard by millions of Londoners, winners will receive an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of a transport site related to their entry. This could include a visit to a bus depot, a Tube or rail station, the IFS Cloud Cable Car, or even the cycle hire operations hub. To top it off, each winner will receive a special ‘goodie bag’ filled with TfL 25th anniversary merchandise, including a collectible poster.
This initiative is part of TfL’s wider celebrations marking its 25th year, which have already seen a live music event at Liverpool Street station, the launch of a silver ‘TfL25’ roundel, and a series of posters showcasing transport milestones, such as the Northern Line Extension, Oyster card, and the Night Tube. TfL’s impact on London goes beyond transport—it has helped create jobs, improve air quality through ULEZ, and provide free travel for young Londoners, ensuring the city remains accessible for all.
The competition is open until Wednesday, 23 April. For full details, visit TfL Travel for Life’s official website. This initiative is part of TfL’s commitment to sustainable travel, encouraging schools to take part in the Travel for Life accreditation programme. More than 700 London schools have already achieved Gold status by promoting walking, cycling, and public transport use.
Families can also celebrate London’s transport history at the London Transport Museum during the Easter holidays. From 4-6 April, transport fans can explore the usually closed-off Acton Depot, home to over 320,000 historical objects, including vintage Tube trains, trams, and buses. With mini tours, expert talks, and family-friendly activities, it’s the perfect way to mark TfL’s milestone.
