Yahya Sinwar: The Mastermind Behind Hamas’ Attack on Israel
Yahya Sinwar, the 61-year-old leader of Hamas in Gaza, masterminded the attack on Israel that shocked the world on 7 October 2023. Sinwar’s calculated actions have plunged the region into a catastrophe with no clear end in sight. As the figure most responsible for determining the trajectory of this conflict, his role has loomed large in the escalating violence. Israeli forces reported that Sinwar was killed in Gaza, though there was no immediate confirmation from Hamas.
Sinwar’s rise to power within Hamas and his notoriety in Israel date back to years spent in Israeli prisons, where he mastered Hebrew and carefully studied his enemy. Sinwar, alongside the shadowy Mohammed Deif, engineered the surprise attack that claimed around 1,200 Israeli lives, mostly civilians, and resulted in the abduction of approximately 250 others. The attack shattered Israel’s image of invincibility and caught its military and intelligence forces off guard.
The Israeli response has been devastating. Over 42,000 Palestinians have died, Gaza has been ravaged, and many of its residents face homelessness and starvation. Sinwar’s iron grip on Gaza, and his role in indirect negotiations with Israel, marked him as a pivotal player in the region. His focus on securing the release of Palestinian prisoners, reminiscent of the deal that freed him, drew Hamas closer to Iran and other regional allies. This war has not only drawn Hezbollah into the conflict but has seen Israel and Iran exchange direct fire for the first time, raising fears of a wider conflict.
For Israelis, Yahya Sinwar was seen as a nightmare. Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari described him as a “murderer worse than ISIS,” while Palestinians viewed him as a defiant figure who stayed in Gaza, unlike other Hamas leaders living abroad. Sinwar was both respected and feared in Gaza, known for his brutal suppression of dissent.
Born in 1962 in Khan Younis, Gaza, to a family displaced by the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, Yahya Sinwar was a founding member of Hamas. His leadership of Hamas’ security arm, Majd, was marked by ruthlessness, especially in eliminating Palestinian collaborators with Israel. His imprisonment by Israel in the late 1980s for multiple murders only solidified his stature within Hamas. After being released in a controversial prisoner exchange in 2011, Sinwar rose to become Hamas’ top leader in Gaza in 2017.
Throughout his time in power, Yahya Sinwar coordinated between Hamas’ political leadership and its military wing, the Qassam Brigades. His brutal methods, such as the 2016 killing of a senior Hamas commander in a power struggle, cemented his reputation for ruthlessness.
