Swandon Way underpass begins improvement work
Wandsworth’s improvement teams are now working on Swandon Way rail bridge as part of the borough’s renewal programme. It is the latest bridge in Wandsworth to undergo renewal works to make it a “brighter, lighter and safer route for all road users,” according to the council.
Swandon Way underpass’ walls and roof were jet-washed before the base coat is painted on. “Wandsworth Town” will be written at each end with new lighting and a bright artwork mural painted on the walls of the entrance. The mocked-up image below shows how a section of the mural will look when the walls are completed.
The works will “make it a more welcoming underpass to travel through,” says Wandsworth, adding that it is responding to feedback from local residents and businesses who asked for better lighting, cleaner spaces, and safer walking and cycling routes through the town centre.
The bridge renewal project is paid for using funds that the Wandsworth has secured from property developers to improve the local area, meaning that it comes at no cost to the tax payer.

“Neighbourhood improvements” are also being delivered across Wandsworth Town Centre, including a transformation of Old York Road with new paving, planting, and public space improvements. Other work includes decluttering town centre pavements where there are obstructions, widening or improving footways by rotating bus shelters, and improving lighting and the public realm along The Causeway and Swandon Way.
Wandsworth Town Station will also see upgrades to make it more accessible and better connected to the town centre. It will deliver a new second entrance and step free access to all platforms. Click here for more about the station’s upgrade.
Residents and businesses are encouraged to “stay involved and help shape future improvements” in Wandsworth Town. The next community drop-in session event will be on Saturday 14th March at Swaffield Primary School where residents can find out about the improvements, what’s coming next, and share their views.
