Silvertown Tunnel nears completion
Silvertown Tunnel project is progressing steadily, with both of the 1.1km tunnels now fully constructed. To further the completion of the project, Transport for London (TfL) has announced the closure of the southbound Blackwall Tunnel across the weekends of 17th – 19th August and 7th – 9th September. These closures are essential for finalizing the road layout that will support the new tunnel, set to open in 2025.
The Silvertown Tunnel, linking Silvertown and the Greenwich Peninsula, aims to reduce chronic congestion caused by the Victorian-era Blackwall Tunnel. The older tunnel suffers from frequent closures, resulting in delays, poor air quality, and economic loss. The new tunnel will improve journey times, reduce pollution, and increase the number of buses crossing the river, all of which will be zero-emission during peak hours.
While the southbound Blackwall Tunnel is closed, drivers are advised to plan alternative routes, as roads and river crossings in East and Central London will be busier than usual. The Woolwich Ferry will be operational every 15 minutes during these closures, and public transport, walking, or cycling is encouraged where possible.
TfL will also be rerouting the 108 bus, splitting it into two services across the closure weekends. Passengers using the Jubilee line to complete their journey will automatically receive a refund for the Tube fare, ensuring no additional cost.
As work on the Silvertown Tunnel continues, critical testing and installation of safety equipment are underway. By the end of September, new walking and cycling paths around Tidal Basin Roundabout will open, improving access to the Royal Docks.
