Renault concept car promises 90% reduction in CO2 emissions

Renault has unveiled a new concept car that it heralds for its decarbonisation, which the French company calls “a key objective in the fight against climate change.” The Renault Emblème, unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October 2024, demonstrates this goal.

The “vision” says Renault, is of a vehicle which is “showcasing the innovations developed” by the company and its partners to meet these requirements. Its goal is the total life cycle of the vehicle, “from cradle to grave” and thee emissions generated from production as well as disposal.

Renault says that the concept car will “slash” emissions by 90% compared with an equivalent vehicle built today, or “just 5 tonnes of CO2” over its entire life.

To achieve this, “the project explored a multitude of intelligent, credible and viable combinations: recycled materials with a low carbon footprint, natural materials, production processes relying entirely on renewable energy, general implementation of re-used parts and circularity, etc,” the company says.

On the outside, the car is a five door crossover SUV, albeit a more streamlined one, with a design that focuses on the “optimisation of aerodynamics.” To help that, exterior mirrors are replaced by cameras integrated into the wheelarches while the windscreen wipers are tucked away under the bonnet. Even the door handles have been recessed into the bodywork, helping it achieve a drag coefficient of just 0.25.

As you no doubt guessed, this is an electric car. But it also makes use of a hydrogen fuel cell, allowing for longer journeys. The electric motor, Renault boasts, has no rare earth metals while the smaller battery is “lighter, cheaper, less bulky and more environmentally friendly than that of a long-range family electric vehicle.”

Despite its size, it can still manage “several hundred kilometres” which should be enough for most journeys.

This is a concept for now but expect much of its tech to be in a car you could be driving in the not-too-distant future.
