Reform UK has found itself at the centre of a growing internal dispute, with MP Rupert Lowe’s suspension triggering a wider debate about leadership, party unity, and due process. The Great Yarmouth MP was removed from the party following allegations of bullying and threats of violence towards chairman Zia Yusuf. The Metropolitan Police is currently assessing the claims, while Reform has commissioned an independent investigation. However, tensions have escalated after the lawyer leading the inquiry denied making statements that Lowe had attributed to her.
Lowe has strongly refuted the allegations, insisting there is “no credible evidence” against him. He claims his suspension is politically motivated, suggesting that his vocal criticism of Nigel Farage’s leadership is the real reason behind his removal. His comments about Reform being a “protest party led by the Messiah” added further fuel to the controversy. While Reform maintains that the suspension is a necessary step in addressing serious complaints, Lowe has accused the party of attempting to silence him, vowing to take legal action if necessary.
The situation took another turn when Lowe claimed the King’s Counsel (KC) overseeing the investigation had expressed “shock” at the process and stated that no credible evidence had been presented. The KC later issued a statement denying these claims, making it clear that she had not used such language. This contradiction has added an additional layer of uncertainty to an already turbulent affair, raising questions about transparency within the party.
Reform UK’s leadership has defended the decision to suspend Lowe, emphasising the need for an independent investigation. Deputy leader Richard Tice has stated that the party must uphold proper standards and that the allegations require a thorough review. However, with tensions already high, some members fear that the party’s handling of the situation could lead to deeper divisions.
While Lowe now sits as an independent MP, the implications of this fallout are yet to be fully seen. Reform UK has been growing in prominence, positioning itself as an alternative voice in British politics, but internal disputes like this risk undermining that momentum.
