Israel participation leads to calls in Spain to boycott World Cup
If Israel participates at the 2026 World Cup in the Canada, Mexico, and the USA, one group in the Spanish congress has called on the country to boycott the tournament. Patxi López, a spokesperson for the Socialist Group in Congress said that “at the appropriate time,” Spain could bow out of the tournament if the Israeli team participates.
The Spanish government has continually debated over Israel participating in international sports competitions, a debate that has recently resurfaced. At a press conference, López called on sports organisations to “exclude” Israel from tournaments, as they had done to Russia following the invasion of Ukraine.
As for a boycott of the tournament, “that’s what we’re doing now, we’ll consider it later,” when asked about the potential for the 2010 World Cup and four-time European champions to potentially withdraw from the tournament.
Under FIFA’s rules, Israel is still in the battle to qualify for the tournament, sharing a rougroup with Italy, Norway, Estonia, and Moldova. It is currently third in the group with 9 points following five matches played. Teams that finish first would qualify automatically while the runners-up will go to a playoff.
