Imperial College London has finished higher than both Oxford and Cambridge Universities in the global rankings. The QS Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings has seen the London university climb from sixth to second place, ending the years of dominance of the other two in the international rankings.
Cambridge fell to sixth place while Oxford still keeps a podium finish with a third in the rankings for 2025. Only the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in America, which kept its spot on top, performed better than Imperial College London. University College London, in ninth place, was another British University that made it to the top ten.
This marks the first time that neither Oxford nor Cambridge has finished first among British universities since the global rankings began 20 years ago. In 2014, Imperial College London came in joint second place with Cambridge.
The QS said that its improved position in the rankings was thanks to its research performance, scores for employability, and commitment to sustainability. This year saw 90 British universities ranked by QS, with 20 improving over their position last year. Nearly three out of five, a total of 52, have seen their position fall in the table, and 18 have remained stable.
Higher education in the UK is struggling amidst funding shortages and restrictions, as well as “ambiguity” over the status of international students, QS said.
