IKEA Oxford Street Finally Announces Opening Date for New Flagship Store
If you’ve ever found yourself wrestling a Kallax unit through Zone 4 with aching arms and a blue Frakta bag full of bargain candles, the latest IKEA news will come as a welcome relief. IKEA Oxford Street is finally opening its doors on 1st May 2025, and for Londoners, it couldn’t come soon enough.
Taking over the Grade II-listed building that once housed the Topshop flagship at 214 Oxford Street, the new IKEA will bring the full Swedish experience to the heart of central London. That means three floors of home inspiration, a market hall with more than 3,500 items of kitchenware and décor, and a 130-seat Swedish deli serving hot dogs, meatballs with lingonberry sauce, and all the rest.
After years of delays, IKEA confirmed the opening date this week. The new store follows the closure of its temporary “Hus of Frakta” pop-up, which showcased the iconic blue carrier bag in playful and stylish forms. If you haven’t yet popped in, it’s open until Sunday 23rd March before final renovations begin.
Originally floated back in 2015, the Oxford Street store has had a long journey to fruition. Its initial launch was earmarked for autumn 2023, then postponed to autumn 2024. The updated 1st May 2025 opening follows a meticulous, three-year renovation of the former Topshop site, which IKEA acquired in 2022 for a reported £378 million.
This has not just been a matter of repainting walls and rolling out showrooms. The building’s extensive refurbishment includes a full heritage restoration, combining environmental upgrades with a deep respect for architectural history. Gas boilers have been swapped for sustainable air-source heat pumps, insulation has been improved with secondary glazing, and the famous Victorian roof lantern has been carefully restored and protected with a modern cover to maintain energy efficiency.
Visitors will also see the building’s original façade revived to its former glory, with updated interiors including sensitively modernised lift lobbies. The goal has been to balance sustainability and style, true to IKEA’s ethos, while preserving what makes the Oxford Street site special.
In addition to the IKEA store itself, the development includes four floors of office space and three additional retail units, creating a multi-use hub in a key location. You can find further information on the Oxford Street development via this official page from Westminster City Council on major planning projects: Westminster Planning Policies.
If you’re wondering what to expect once it opens – yes, the meatballs will be there. And yes, there’s a hot dog stand.
