UK, Japan, and Italy Join Forces to Accelerate Next-Generation Fighter Jet Development
Global Combat Air Program fighter jet collaboration has gained significant momentum as the UK, Japan, and Italy fast-track the development of a next-generation stealth aircraft. The latest development in the project occurred this past weekend, when defence ministers from the UK, Japan, and Italy—John Healey, Gen Nakatani, and Guido Crosetto—announced plans to establish a new government body to oversee the collaboration. The GCAP International Government Organization (GIGO) is expected to be operational by the end of this year and will be based in the UK.
“We now see the launch of GIGO and a joint venture on track toward signing their first contract next year,” Nakatani said after the meeting. This commitment to speeding up development is seen as a critical step towards ensuring that the project remains on schedule, despite leadership changes in both Japan and the UK.

Akira Sugimoto, the senior representative for GCAP at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, expressed optimism about the collaboration. “Our basic position is to bring our strengths together to develop a high-quality fighter jet. I believe Japanese suppliers have outstanding technologies, and I do hope as many of them as possible would join GCAP,” Sugimoto said.
This fighter jet collaboration not only aims to enhance the military capabilities of Japan, the UK, and Italy but also presents a significant opportunity for Japan to strengthen its underdeveloped domestic defence industry. By participating in this project, Japan hopes to elevate its role on the global defence stage, particularly as it contends with an increasingly assertive China.
