Aldgate High-Rise Fire Draws Major Response from Emergency Services
An Aldgate high-rise caught fire on Sunday evening, sending thick smoke over east London and drawing a major response from emergency services. The blaze broke out in a sixth-floor flat on Leman Street and spread upwards to the floor above, prompting the evacuation of residents and the deployment of around 100 firefighters.
Around 100 firefighters were sent to the scene, along with 15 fire engines. Eleven residents were led to safety, and while the damage to the building is extensive, no injuries have been reported. For many locals and passers-by, the sight of large flames sweeping across balconies was a shock and a worrying reminder of how quickly such fires can escalate in densely populated areas.
As the fire grew, large plumes of smoke could be seen rising across the skyline. Specialist crews used a 64-metre turntable ladder to gain a clearer view from above and help assess the fire’s spread. It was brought under control by early evening, though crews remained onsite into the night to dampen remaining hotspots and support residents.

Emergency services, including police and ambulance units, closed off surrounding roads, advising the public to avoid the area due to congestion and safety concerns. Investigations into the cause of the fire are now underway.
Londoners living in tower blocks or other multi-storey buildings are again being reminded to check their home safety measures, from smoke alarms to evacuation plans, and to make sure they know what to do in the event of a fire.
