City of London Driving Sustainability Through Ambitious Benchmarks

The SPD introduces ambitious benchmarks such as the NABERS UK 5-star target for new office developments and 4-star target for retrofitted offices. The sustainability guidance also compliments the Greater London Authority benchmarks for embodied carbon, a critical step in reducing the carbon footprint of construction projects.

Developments that fail to meet embodied carbon benchmarks will be required to deliver additional sustainability benefits. Examples include:

  • Supporting local energy networks.
  • Upgrading public spaces to encourage sustainable transport.
  • Implementing cooling infrastructure for climate resilience.
  • Providing training and skills for sustainable construction practices.

A Global Leader in Sustainable Design

Shravan Joshi, Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Planning and Transportation Committee, expressed optimism about the new guidance:

“The Committee’s approval of the Planning for Sustainability SPD is a major step forward in pursuit of our decarbonisation goals. This guidance provides transparency to the built environment sector, encouraging it to join us on this journey.”

Joshi also emphasised the City of London’s reputation as a leader in sustainable design, stating:

“The Square Mile continues to attract top global talent and businesses with its sustainable commercial spaces. We’re setting the pace globally for innovative and environmentally conscious developments.”

The Bigger Picture: Sustainability in Action

The SPD is more than a document—it’s a commitment to creating a greener, more resilient Square Mile. By holding developers accountable for sustainability targets and embracing innovative construction models, the City Corporation is setting an example for urban centres worldwide.
