Monet: The Petit Bras of the Seine at Argenteuil to Tour UK

The National Gallery has announced that The Petit Bras of the Seine at Argenteuil (1872) by Claude Monet will be part of its Masterpiece Tour 2025-27, a touring exhibition that will bring the iconic painting to four UK venues: the Sainsbury Centre in Norwich, South Shields Museum and Art Gallery, Grundy Art Gallery in Blackpool, and Ferens Art Gallery in Hull.

This marks the first time the National Gallery’s Masterpiece Tour will involve four regional partners. The work, which has only left the gallery once in the last 20 years, offers a serene depiction of a winter’s day in Argenteuil, a small town on the outskirts of Paris. Monet captures the stillness of the river, with its reflective waters and hints of the industrialisation and leisure activities starting to shape the town.

Since its inception in 2014, the National Gallery Masterpiece Tour has reached nearly 400,000 people across the UK, and this partnership aims to continue expanding access to the National Gallery’s renowned collection. As part of this initiative, the gallery outlines its commitment to broadening engagement through regional partnerships, which you can read more about on the National Gallery’s official website.

At the Sainsbury Centre, the Monet painting will be displayed as part of a larger exhibition reflecting on contemporary questions such as ‘Can We Stop Killing Each Other?’, while also supporting mental health initiatives through their Compassionate Museum programme. Meanwhile, the South Shields Museum will combine Monet’s work with other local landscape pieces, engaging with the surrounding natural environment.

Grundy Art Gallery in Blackpool will pair the Monet with a solo exhibition by the North West artist Louise Giovanelli, while Ferens Art Gallery’s display will include a multi-sensory experience created in collaboration with their Flourish group for disabled and neurodivergent visitors.

Supported by Hiscox, the Masterpiece Tour continues the National Gallery’s mission to bring significant works to audiences outside of London, ensuring more people across the UK can experience world-class art in their local communities.
