Maguire given 15-month suspended sentence in Greece

Manchester United and England defender Harry Maguire has been given a 15-month suspended sentence by a court in Greece for an incident in Mykonos in 2020. The former Leicester City player was handed a suspended sentence of 21 months and 10 days in prison after being found guilty of repeated bodily harm, attempted bribery, violence against public employees, and insult, BBC Sport reports.

The defender’s legal team had lodged an appeal against the verdict which, under Greek law, would nullify the conviction and result in a full retrial. The retrial was postponed four times before restarting in Syros, concluding that Maguire was guilty of non-serious assault, resisting arrest, and attempted bribery.

Due to the reduced severity of the crimes, Maguire received a reduced sentence of 15 months. The player denies any wrongdoing, planning to appeal to Greece’s Supreme Court.

He has previously rejected multiple opportunities to settle the case out of court, being determined to clear his name legally of any guilt.

The 32-year-old was called on by the Red Devils for their Premier League fixture which saw a 10-man Newcastle win 2-1 thanks to goals from Anthony Gordon and William Osula. This marked the first loss under current boss and former United player Micheal Carrick who has seen the club rise to third place in the league.
