London Library Services Boost as Putney Welcomes New and Improved Facilities
Putney Library Reopens After £1 Million Renovation
London library services are in the spotlight this week, as after extensive building work, Putney Library has reopened, celebrating its 125th anniversary with new and improved facilities.
The facility, which first opened in 1899, now features a refurbished children’s section, a quiet study area, and upgraded heating and security systems.
A standout feature is the new café, managed by the Putney Pantry team from St Mary’s Church by Putney Bridge. This addition is part of a £1 million investment from Wandsworth Council.
The library has also responded to the capital’s flexible working trend, offering new ‘Start-Up Wandsworth’ co-working spaces and a meeting room for up to 45 people. More details about these services are available on the library’s website.
Putney MP Fleur Anderson visited the library after its reopening and encouraged locals to check out the changes. “It was lovely to grab a coffee at the new Putney Library café last weekend to celebrate its re-opening,” she said. “I am so proud of our Labour-led Wandsworth Council for this wonderful £1 million renovation.”
She added, “Putney Library has been a community staple for 125 years. This investment shows our commitment to maintaining a space for learning, community, and support for years to come.”

A National Picture on Library Services
Across the UK, libraries are facing big challenges as they adapt to changing community needs. While some libraries struggle with funding cuts and reduced hours, others are finding new ways to engage the public through collaborating with community groups and providing new services.
Innovations like co-working spaces, community cafés, and digital resources are helping libraries stay relevant and vital. Nationally, there is broad support for the importance of libraries, too: According the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, satisfaction with the library service is high among library users, and those who visited a library in 2019/20, 70% were either very satisfied with the library service.

A Vote of Confidence for Wandsworth Libraries
The reopening follows the launch of Wandsworth Town and Northcote Libraries earlier this year. Library usage in Wandsworth is on the rise, with over a million visits last year, a 17% increase from the previous year.
Judi Gasser, Wandsworth’s Cabinet Member for libraries, expressed pride in the improvements. “I’m proud we’re keeping our libraries top-notch for residents. Putney Library, open for 125 years, will remain a vital resource thanks to this investment. Our libraries are among the best-used in the country, and we are dedicated to providing excellent facilities.”
