Free bulky waste collection service collects thousands of items

Wandsworth Council is hailing its free bulky waste collection service as “a runaway success,” with 10,000 bookings and over 23,000 items collected. This “quick, convenient” service is helping residents get rid of large unwanted items. Already, 5,000 items of home furniture like wardrobes, tables, chairs and shelves have been collected, along with over 2,600 beds, 2,400 mattresses, 1,500 sofas, 1,200 kitchen appliances, almost 10,000 sacks and much more, saving local people thousands of trips to the tip.

It’s also going down well with users, earning an average rating of 4.8 out of 5 in a recent resident survey.

Each free collection can be for up to four items or 12 sacks of waste, and the maximum waiting time has successfully been cut to just one week, meaning there’s no need to let clutter build up at home.

Paul White, Cabinet Member for Environment, praised the success of the new service so far: “It’s wonderful to see so many people making use of this new service. Whether you’re moving house, don’t have a car, or just need to get rid of some large items, book your free collection and we’ll take care of the rest.”

The free bulky waste service comes as part of the council’s Cleaner Borough Plan and is paired with a commitment to retain weekly waste and recycling collections, expand much-loved Mega Skip Days and deliver cleaner streets.

More than 6,500 tonnes of extra recycling has been collected in less than a year thanks to residents’ hard work and the Cleaner Borough Plan, equivalent to 400 double-decker buses.

The improvements have generated cost savings of £1.3 million, which will be reinvested to make streets cleaner.

Paul White added, “We’re proud to be offering a service which makes life easier for local people, while maintaining the lowest Council Tax in the country.”
