Economic growth in London: Wandsworth identified as key hub
Wandsworth has been recognised as a vital part of London’s future economic growth, with major opportunities for investment, job creation, and innovation highlighted in a new strategic plan for the capital. The plan, developed by the Mayor of London and London Councils in collaboration with businesses and local stakeholders, outlines key areas where Wandsworth will play a leading role in shaping the city’s economic landscape.
Battersea has been officially recognised as an internationally significant visitor destination and a hub for creative industries. It is home to major institutions such as the Royal College of Art, Apple’s London headquarters, renowned architectural firm Foster + Partners, and technology company SharkNinja. Battersea and New Covent Garden have been identified as key sites for industrial innovation, reinforcing their role in driving forward London’s economic development.
St George’s Hospital, alongside local universities, has been earmarked as a potential life sciences cluster, acknowledging its crucial contributions to medical research and innovation. Strategically important housing developments in Wandsworth Town Centre, Clapham Junction, and Nine Elms are set to provide thousands of new homes, including much-needed affordable housing.
Clapham Junction has been highlighted as a regionally significant transport hub, playing a crucial role in the Crossrail 2 project. Enhancements to future transport infrastructure will support new housing developments and boost economic growth.
Simon Hogg, Leader of Wandsworth Council, welcomed the recognition. “This plan is good news for Wandsworth as it will help shape investment into our borough for many years ahead”, he said. “We’re delighted to be recognised for growth and economic development and as a trusted delivery partner over the next decade. We’ll continue to ensure that new opportunities deliver real benefits for our residents, from affordable homes to high-quality jobs.”
