Defibrillators installed to “eliminate defib deserts” in London
London Ambulance Services (LAS) has installed an additional 30 defibrillators in a bid to “eliminate ‘defib deserts’ in the capital.” The London Ambulance Charity’s Heart Starters campaign is installing 200 in 150 neighbourhoods in London where there is little access to the life-saving devices.
When the campaign was launched, analysts at LAS identified ‘defib deserts’ or areas with the worst access to defibrillators. Now, with an additional charity defibrillation co-ordinator role, the service says it is “ramping up” the number of installations across London.
LAS remains “most concerned” about 75 neighbourhoods out of the original 150 areas, and it is “urging groups and communities to step forward to host one,” it said. The progress follows dedicated fundraising for the target and a £150,000 donation from the Mayor of London to give communities across the capital better access to the life-saving devices.
The charity is also calling on Londoners to raise vital funds for defibrillators by abseiling from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 19th March. If you are interested in supporting the Charity’s work by taking on the adrenaline-fuelled Big Stadium Abseil, you can register for the event here.
