Survey finds third of homeowners love their property as much as their partner

A survey has found that just over one in three homeowners love the property they live in as much as they love their other half. The survey, carried out by Opinium, asked 2,000 people just before Valentine’s Day.
More than two-thirds of those asked felt that they “truly love” their home while four-fifths had felt strongly protective of it. Around half said that they would be personally offended if they heard someone criticising their home, research commissioned by home assistance provider HomeServe found.
“Our homes are far more than just where we live – they are deeply personal spaces that reflect who we are,” said psychologist Dr Audrey Tang.
The survey was carried out just before 14 February and found that people were spending as much as £806 per annum on home improvements. By comparison, it found that the average spending on gifts for their partner was only £388.
HomeServe launched an online quiz to learn more about people’s “home personality.”
“Our homes are far more than just where we live – they are deeply personal spaces that reflect who we are,” Dr Tang said. “We personalise them, shape them to our needs, and share them with the people closest to us. This connection goes beyond aesthetics: our homes represent safety, identity, and control.
“They’re where we can truly relax and be authentic, free from the roles we perform in the outside world. It’s no surprise that people invest so much in their homes – they’re not just places, they’re physical extensions of ourselves.”
