Liverpool Manager Matt Beard Criticizes Team’s Work-Rate After Draw Against Crystal Palace

Liverpool boss Matt Beard expressed his frustration with his team’s performance after a 1-1 draw at home against Crystal Palace in the Women’s Super League. The Reds fell behind early when former striker Katie Stengel scored for Palace in the 14th minute, but Cornelia Kapocs equalized with a superb finish.

Despite the draw, Beard was critical of Liverpool’s lack of intensity. With only one WSL win going into the international break, Beard didn’t hold back, saying Liverpool were fortunate to come away with a point.

“We were lucky to get that point, to be honest,” Beard told BBC Radio 5 Live. “I’m disappointed with the whole performance. Our DNA is based on hard work and aggression, but today we were passive both on and off the ball. Palace showed more desire, and we pulled out of too many tackles. We need to figure out why.”

Stengel, who left Liverpool in 2023 after scoring 17 goals in 33 games, gave Palace the lead after capitalizing on a defensive mix-up. Liverpool responded 23 minutes later when Kapocs fired in an equalizer from the left side of the area.

In the second half, Liverpool’s Gemma Bonner made a crucial defensive block to deny Stengel a second goal. Late in the game, Liverpool’s record signing Olivia Smith almost snatched the win, but her stunning 25-yard effort hit the post.

Liverpool will face Aston Villa on 3 November after the international break, while Crystal Palace will host Manchester City on the same day.
