Improvements to start at Old York Road on 30th September

Wandsworth residents can expect significant improvements to Old York Road as a major project is set to commence on 30th September. These works are part of Wandsworth’s ‘Decade of Renewal’ – a 10-year programme of improvements across Wandsworth.

The improvements will make the road safer for pedestrians and cyclists alike, encourage higher footfall to the local businesses, and create space for nature with enhanced planting. This permanent work continues on from the temporary scheme, which originally removed through-traffic, and increased pavement space.

The planned works will not alter the overall character of Old York Road. Key elements such as the existing planters will be replaced with in-ground plantings, which are designed to improve sightlines and provide sustainable drainage solutions. These changes are intended to enhance both the visual appeal and environmental sustainability of the road.

The roadworks will begin at the western end of Old York Road where it joins the one-way system, moving eastward towards the junction with Ferrier Street at the station end of the road. This first phase of construction is expected to continue through to May 2025, with a scheduled pause over the Christmas period from 6th December to 6th January.

Network Rail is also set to undertake significant works at Wandsworth Town Station in 2025, including the installation of new lifts to improve accessibility. Following the completion of these works, a second phase of road improvements will commence, focusing on the stretch of Old York Road from Ferrier Street under the rail bridge to Bramford Gardens.

Throughout the construction period, existing access routes and traffic movements will remain largely unaffected, including those for delivery and servicing vehicles. However, there may be occasions when outdoor dining areas need to be temporarily suspended to accommodate road resurfacing.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to stay informed about the progress of the works and any potential disruptions. Regular updates will be provided to ensure that the community is aware of any significant changes to traffic flow or access points.
