Dynamic pricing for World Cup criticised by NYC mayoral candidate

Zohran Mamdani, currently the frontrunner Mayoral candidate for New York City, has called on FIFA to abandon its plan to use dynamic pricing for the 2026 World Cup which the US will co-host with Canada and Mexico. He has launched a “Game Over Greed” petition.

Eight games in the tournament will be at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey including the final. But FIFA’s host city agreement is with the New York City as well as New Jersey.

Mamdani is currently leading in the race to be New York’s next mayor, with the latest polls showing that 46% of voters plan to elect him as their mayoral candidate. This puts the Democratic nominee far ahead of second-place Andrew Cuomo who has only 24% of the support.

FIFA confirmed that it plans to use dynamic pricing for the World Cup. An official who spoke anonymously to media said that ticket prices would start at $60 for the cheapest seats in the group stages, though they did not specify how many tickets would sell for that price. At the other end, the most expensive non-hospitality tickets for the final will be as high as $6,730.

Prices are subject to change as FIFA is adopting a dynamic pricing model where they will be based on demand from consumers. The FIFA officials on the call with the media said that it would allow it to maximise both revenue and attendance.

Dynamic pricing is typically associated with astronomically high prices for sports, entertainment, and music events. But at the FIFA Club World Cup earlier this year, also hosted in America, it worked in favour of fans as a lack of demand for the competition saw prices falling. At the semi-final when eventual champions Chelsea took on Brazilian side Fluminense, prices fell as low as $13.40, having been initially priced at $473.90, just a few days earlier.
