Wormholt trial to make area “safer and quieter”
Residents of Wormholt have asked Hammersmith & Fulham council to reduce noise, congestion, and pollution across the residential streets in the area. The council says it has been “working closely” with the residents to “make the area safer and quieter.”
A “neighbourhood improvement trial” that aims to “improve the quality of life for families” across Wormholt will begin in November. More than eight in ten vehicles using its residential roads are commuters cutting through between the A40 and Uxbridge Road. The trial hopes to deter these drivers while allowing H&F residents to “continue to use the streets of Wormholt freely.”
The trial will last for up to 18 months and will tackle “long-standing” complaints about noise, congestion, and pollution. Hundreds of people, including local residents and businesses, took part in an “extensive” consultation, with many giving their support to the use of the “latest camera technology” to discourage non-resident traffic.
“The aim is to significantly reduce traffic in Wormholt while increasing safety for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users,” the council said in a press release. “Vehicle access will be maintained for residents, their visitors and businesses.”
Residents of the borough can still “drive freely everywhere.” If you have an H&F parking permit, and your vehicle is registered with the Hammersmith & Fulham, you can automatically pass through the cameras without any fines. If you’ve got off-street parking but no permit, you can apply for a FREE Borough Access Permit on the council’s website.
Three trial cameras will restrict out-of-borough motorists using Steventon Road, Bryony Road and Sawley Road to cut through between the A40 and Uxbridge Road, and vice versa.
The trial will be enforced by three automatic number plate recognition cameras on Steventon Road near the junction with Old Oak Road, on Bryony Road near the junction with Bloemfontein Road, and on Sawley Road near the junction with Bloemfontein Road.
Every road in the area is still accessible without going through a camera. Drivers can enter and exit via Uxbridge Road. Extensive signage will be put up to help guide motorists. Warning letters during the opening weeks will explain the trial in full to help motorists come to terms with the changes.
