Wandsworth Maintains UK’s Lowest Council Tax for Third Year Running

Wandsworth Council has announced that it will freeze the main portion of its council tax for the third year running, keeping its position as the borough with the lowest council tax in the country. From April, residents in a Band D property will see a total bill of £990, reflecting a modest increase of £29, most of which is due to the rise in the Greater London Authority’s precept.

Council leader Simon Hogg credits Wandsworth’s financial approach for keeping bills low, stating that the borough maintains one of the lowest levels of debt and strongest financial reserves in London. He emphasised that this financial stability allows the council to invest in core services such as cleaner streets, safer neighbourhoods, and a stronger community, while still keeping council tax as low as possible.

Warmer Weather Returns to London in February 2025

After a cold spell, milder temperatures are set to return to London this February. What can residents expect?

While Wandsworth holds its position at the lower end of the scale, other London boroughs are facing steeper council tax bills. Kingston upon Thames will have the highest in the capital, with Band D households paying close to £2,500. Meanwhile, Lambeth residents will see an increase of 4.99%, taking their Band D bills to £1,953.

The Greater London Authority’s precept, which applies to all London boroughs, has increased to £490.38. Notably, London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who has lived in Wandsworth for years, will personally benefit from his home borough’s lower tax rate.

Despite keeping its main council tax charge unchanged, Wandsworth has opted to raise the portion allocated to adult social care by 2%, in line with similar decisions made across London. Residents in parts of the borough will also pay a little extra due to a separate charge from the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators.

The borough continues to focus on efficiency, pledging to answer calls within seven rings and address local issues such as potholes and graffiti within seven days. It has also been named London’s Borough of Culture for 2025, with a year-long programme of events set to begin in April.

Meanwhile, Lambeth Council has pointed to ongoing financial pressures, citing a 50% rise in homeless households requiring support. The borough is now spending millions more than budgeted on temporary accommodation, as demand for housing assistance continues to rise.

As Londoners face varying council tax bills depending on where they live, the financial divide between boroughs remains clear. Wandsworth’s approach may offer relief for its residents, but elsewhere, rising costs continue to put pressure on local councils and those who rely on their services.
