Top Film Premieres at Venice Critics’ Week 2024

Mona Tabbara of Screentime Daily announces that UK-French film director Jethro Massey’s debut feature, ‘Paul & Paulette Take A Bath,’ will premiere at next month’s Venice Critics’ Week. This dark comedy explores the friendship and flirtation between a young American journalist and a French woman, united by their unusual pastime of recreating historic crime scenes. The film stars Marie Benati and Jérémie Galiana.

Michael Premo’s documentary ‘Homegrown’ is also part of the film lineup. It chronicles the journey of three right-wing activists during Donald Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign, offering a unique perspective on American politics.

Milad Tangshir, an Iranian rock star turned filmmaker now based in Italy, presents his first fiction feature, ‘Anywhere, Anytime.’ Known for his VR documentary ‘VR Free,’ Tangshir’s new film explores the life of a young illegal immigrant in Turin.

Opening Critics’ Week is ‘Planet B,’ a France-Belgium production directed by Aude Léa Rapin. Set in 2039, it follows a group of activists who vanish without a trace amidst state persecution. Rapin previously showcased her debut, ‘Heroes Don’t Die,’ at Cannes Critics’ Week in 2019.

The closing film, ‘Little Jaffna,’ directed by Lawrence Valin, is a French thriller about a police officer infiltrating a criminal organisation involved in extortion and money laundering for Sri Lankan separatists.

The 39th Venice Critics’ Week, runs from 28th August to 7th September, 2024, promising a number of compelling films including: “Anywhere, Anytime” (Italy) directed by Milad Tangshir, “Don’t Cry, Butterfly” (Vietnam-Singapore-Philippines-Indonesia) directed by Dương Diệu Linh, “Homegrown” (USA) directed by Michael Premo, “No Sleep Till” (USA) directed by Alexandra Simpson, “Paul & Paulette Take A Bath” (UK) directed by Jethro Massey, “Peacock” (Austria-Germany) directed by Bernhard Wenger, and “Perfumed With Mint” (Egypt-France-Tunisia) directed by Muhammed Hamdy. The festival will open with “Planet B” (France-Belgium) directed by Aude Léa Rapin and close with “Little Jaffna” (France) directed by Lawrence Valin.
