Tabu Leads the Charge in Dune Prophecy as Women Take Centre Stage

Bollywood star Tabu stars in Dune: Prophecy, where women are taking centre stage in global film and TV productions, both on-screen and behind the camera. The acclaimed actor, who appears in the new series inspired by Frank Herbert’s iconic novels, highlighted how female-driven productions are changing the landscape of entertainment worldwide.

Tabu, a beloved figure in Hindi cinema, shared her experience working on the series, originally titled Dune: Sisterhood. Directed by Anna Foerster, the show features strong female narratives, a shift Tabu describes as empowering and long overdue. “Being surrounded, feeling empowered, and feeling like you’re the ones running the show… it’s really, really nice to see that happening,” she said in an interview with BBC Asian Network News.

This trend, Tabu believes, extends beyond international productions and resonates strongly in her native Indian film industry. She points to her recent Hindi film Crew, where she starred alongside Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kriti Sanon. The commercially successful film, led entirely by women, is part of the “big change” she has witnessed in cinema. “It’s about experience, maturity, and hard work. Women today have control over their craft and the confidence to manage people and projects effectively,” she explained.

Tabu’s role in Dune: Prophecy as Sister Francesca was both a professional and personal opportunity. The series allowed her to immerse herself in a diverse working environment, collaborating with international talents from the UK, Serbia, Spain, Ukraine, and Germany. “I always love these experiences. You learn so much about people, cultures, and yourself,” Tabu said, adding that the global collaboration made the project even more enriching.

Critics have praised Dune: Prophecy as “a bracingly different sci-fi dominated by women at every level”, with Indian fans celebrating Tabu’s presence in the show. For Tabu, whose career spans decades with roles in Life of Pi and A Suitable Boy, the excitement lies in continuous growth. “Sometimes I feel like I’m still new and learning so much. I’m lucky to experience characters in completely new ways, which helps me explore myself further.”

Tabu remains deeply connected to her craft, treating acting as a “live experience” that evolves every day. She believes the role of Sister Francesca allowed her to discover new dimensions within herself. “Acting is about putting yourself out there, exploring, and expressing. It’s a personal journey,” she reflected, grateful for the love and respect she’s received from audiences globally.

As highlighted by Women in Film UK, initiatives supporting female talent continue to create opportunities for women to take charge in global productions.

Dune: Prophecy marks another milestone in Tabu’s illustrious career, solidifying her place as a global star while underscoring the growing prominence of women in film.
