Space gallery to open in Science Museum

As the Science Museum closes its Exploring Space gallery after four decades, it has announced a new gallery, Space, that will open to the public on Saturday 20th September. The gallery will bring together objects that will celebrate the first space age as well as the future of space exploration. This includes cutting-edge prototype technology created in the UK and never-before displayed.

There will be plenty of opportunities to learn more about the galaxy, space exploration, how astronauts use the toilet, and more with free activities throughout the summer at the museum, even before the new gallery opens. The Space Show will be a new free family show in the Lecture Theatre, inviting visitors to see and take part in science demonstrations and live experiments.

The gallery will showcase new technologies from Britain’s space sector on display for the first time. This includes prototype electric propulsion technology from Magdrive, as well as international innovations, including the ‘rolly-polly’ Moon rover, the result of the first ever collaboration between a space agency and a toy company.

Iconic objects, including even a piece from the Moon, the capsule that carried astronaut Tim Peake, and the space suit worn by astronaut Helen Sharman, will all be featured in the gallery.

This comes following the closure of the Exploring Space gallery after 39 years at the Science Museum.
