Sheltered housing inspections underway

A borough-wide programme is underway in Hammersmith & Fulham to inspect all homes in the council’s sheltered housing scheme. The in-house repairs team has completed over 220 home inspections and resolved 236 unreported repairs that were needed.

Sheltered housing “helps older people live independently in council-owned homes,” Hammersmith & Fulham said. The “proactive” “find and fix” approach is “helping to keep our older residents safe in their homes and reduce emergency callouts.”

“This is another great example of how the housing team is going the extra mile to support our older residents in council homes,” Cllr Frances Umeh, H&F Cabinet Member for Housing and Homelessness said. “Hundreds of unreported repairs have now been found and fixed thanks to this proactive approach. It forms part of the council’s £1million-a-week investment to make H&F the best place to live in a council home in Britain.”

The checks on the homes have been carried out in Michael Stewart House, Viking Court, Stanford Court, Manor Court, Philpot Square, Graville House and Cedar Lodge. The team will then move on to Swanbank Court, Rowberry Close and Meadowbank in the upcoming months.

Residents will receive a letter inviting them to get in touch, either by phone or email, to book a visit from the team. The visit involves:

  • checking taps and visible pipework to ensure they’re free from drips and water is flowing freely, with no blockages
  • doors and windows are checked, to ensure they’re opening and closing effectively, including kitchen unit doors and any fitted wardrobe doors installed by the council
  • electrics are checked, to ensure there aren’t any cracks or exposed wires
  • a visual check of radiators is also carried out, with any issues reported to our mechanical and heating department.

If a repair is found, the visiting officer will then book in the repair team to attend and fix the issue.
