Sadiq Khan among New Year honours list for knighthood

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has been named in the New Year honours list to receive a knighthood, along with other political figures. Khan was voted in to serve his third term as London Mayor in 2024 after over two decades as a Labour politician.

According to a document seen by the Financial Times, Commons foreign affairs committee chair Emily Thornberry will be granted a damehood. Former Labour Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt has also been on the document, according to the FT.

Andy Street, the former West Midlands mayor who was defeated in local elections in May, and former schools minister Nick Gribb have also been named, along with Tories Ranil Jayawardena and Marcus Jones, who will also receive a knighthood.

The Cabinet Office said it does not “comment on speculation on honours,” however.

The news comes as Khan vowed to give Donald Trump “the benefit of the doubt” despite past criticisms during his first term in the White House. Khan told James O’Brien on LBC that he hoped to “put out the hand of friendship” to Trump and “wish him well.”
