Roehampton Alton Estate Improvments Address Road Safety and Transport First

Transport, Housing and Services in the Spotlight as Council Leader and MP Unveil New Plans for Alton Estate
Wandsworth Council is embarking on an extensive programme of Roehampton Alton Estate Improvements, with a suite of new investments set to enhance local living conditions, safety, and infrastructure. The Alton Renewal Plan, unveiled by Council Leader Simon Hogg, promises significant investment, with a strong focus on community engagement and sustainable development.
A Vision for Rejuvenation
At a community drop-in event on 13th July at Roehampton Leisure Centre, Simon Hogg, along with local ward councillors, cabinet members, and Fleur Anderson, MP for Putney and Roehampton, detailed the council’s vision. Hogg underscored the council’s commitment to addressing residents’ concerns, stating, “This council is doing things differently and focusing on real improvements to the Alton estate after listening carefully to local views and needs which have shaped our plan.”
The plan is designed to foster collaboration with residents, community organisations, businesses, and local stakeholders to rejuvenate the area. Key highlights include the development of affordable housing, enhanced public services, and robust transport and community safety measures.
Getting On and Going Places
Residents can soon expect noticeable changes from the Roehampton Alton Estate Improvements, including:
- Transport Enhancements: The expansion of the Wandsworth Community Bus service, improved cycle facilities, and upgrades to roads and pavements. New zebra crossings and School Streets pilot schemes are also part of the plan to boost pedestrian safety.
- Community Facilities: The estate will see a Mega Skip event on 27th July, allowing residents to dispose of bulky waste free of charge. Plans are also underway to introduce a dedicated Community Safety Officer, a new Family Hub, and a revamped jobs and training service.

Long-term Community Investments
Beyond the immediate upgrades, the plan includes several long-term initiatives:
- A Community Hub: A state-of-the-art facility featuring a library, youth club, and enhanced outdoor lighting strategy.
- Making a Destination: Improved shop fronts, new retail spaces, and a focus on making Alton a central hub for events during Wandsworth’s London Borough of Culture in 2025.
- Green spaces: A focus on parks and nature for quality of life will be welcome news for an area adjacent to the A3 into London. Over the next year, the Alton Activity Centre and Downshire Field will undergo significant landscaping and play area upgrades.
Housing Issues on the Agenda
Feedback from local residents focused on a need for more housing and better living conditions. The council has plans to demolish some existing housing blocks and explore retrofitting options for others. Key housing initiatives include:
- New Homes on Fontley Way: With social housing availability under strain nationally, fourteen homes will soon be available, freeing up space on the council’s housing waiting list.
- More on the way: Forty new council homes are under construction above Roehampton Community Hub, slated to open in 2028.
Next Steps
With the plan for Roehampton Alton Estate Improvements now approved, the council will move forward with consultations and a resident ballot. These discussions are a chance for the community to have their say on whether the changes will support their needs and aspirations. They will refine plans for new homes, community facilities, commercial spaces, and open space improvements.
