Putney Leisure Centre gets eco-friendly upgrades
Putney Leisure Centre has recently undergone significant eco-friendly enhancements, including upgraded lighting and a new air handling system. These improvements aim to provide better air quality and consistent temperature control in the pool area, enhancing the overall experience for swimmers. Moreover, the new systems are more energy-efficient, contributing to a reduction in the centre’s carbon emissions.
The previous emissions from the Putney Leisure Centre were 646 tCO2e, and the new emissions will be 599 tCO2e. This reduction is equivalent to cancelling 47 flights from London to New York each year or driving 235,000 miles in a petrol car.
Judi Gasser, Wandsworth Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, highlighted that these upgrades not only make the pool a more pleasant place to swim but also reduce energy consumption and cut emissions. She emphasized that this initiative supports healthier lifestyles while working towards a more sustainable future for Wandsworth.
These enhancements align with Wandsworth Council’s ambition to become a carbon-neutral organisation by 2030 and to help the entire borough reach net zero by 2043. Reducing the carbon footprint of council-owned buildings and facilities is a crucial part of their climate action plan.
In addition to environmental initiatives, Wandsworth Council is committed to promoting healthier and more active lifestyles among residents. The ‘Wandsworth Moves Together’ strategy aims to make Wandsworth London’s most active borough by providing better access to high-quality physical and leisure activities.
Furthermore, the council’s ‘Access for All’ scheme offers free holiday swimming lessons for eligible children in years two to seven and free sessions in council leisure and sports centres, including gym and swim.
These initiatives reflect Wandsworth Council’s dedication to enhancing the well-being of its residents while addressing environmental challenges. By investing in sustainable infrastructure and promoting active lifestyles, the council is paving the way for a healthier and more sustainable future for the community.
