Madonna and Elton John end feud with hint at future collaboration
Madonna and Elton John have put an end to their long-running feud and it sounds like a musical collaboration might be on the horizon.
The two music legends reconnected after Elton’s recent performance on Saturday Night Live, with Madonna sharing on Instagram that she approached him after the show.
“The first thing out of his mouth was ‘forgive me’, and the wall between us fell down,”
she wrote.
Their disagreement, which began in the early 2000s, had been well publicised. In 2004, Elton criticised Madonna’s nomination for Best Live Act at the Q Awards, claiming that artists who lip-sync on stage shouldn’t be recognised. Madonna’s team responded at the time, saying she didn’t “spend her time trashing other artists.”
Elton’s comments resurfaced a number of times in the years that followed. In 2012, after Madonna won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song, beating Elton in the category, she quipped, “I hope he speaks to me for the next couple of years.”
Now, the tone has changed. Madonna, who called Elton “someone I admired so much,” described how much his early music had influenced her growing up. He, in turn, responded on her post, thanking her for “forgiving me and my big mouth” and acknowledging the importance of her work.
“She paved the way for an entire generation of female artists to succeed and be true to themselves,” he wrote. “I’m increasingly distressed by all the divisiveness in our world at the moment. By pulling together, I’m hopeful that we can make great things happen for those who really need support – and have a lot of fun doing it.”
Madonna also hinted that the reconciliation could lead to more than just good will. “He told me he had written a song for me and he wanted to collaborate,” she wrote.
It’s not clear yet whether this potential collaboration will materialise but fans of both artists will no doubt be watching closely. Their careers have rarely crossed paths musically, despite both being among the biggest names in pop over the last four decades.
