Luke Jerram’s Mars installation at Greenwich’s Painted Hall is Unmissable

Want to see Mars without leaving London? Well, this festive season, Luke Jerram’s celestial creation brings a mesmerising glow to the Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College. Known for his previous works Gaia and Museum of the Moon, Jerram’s latest installation offers an awe-inspiring encounter with the Red Planet, all set against the grandeur of one of London’s most historic and artistic landmarks.

Suspended within the Painted Hall, Mars is a seven-metre-wide, internally lit sculpture that’s so detailed it feels like you’re looking at the real thing—albeit one million times smaller. Its surface, created from NASA imagery, showcases the craters, valleys, and ridges of the planet in stunning clarity. Accompanied by a haunting soundscape from BAFTA-winning composer Dan Jones, the installation takes you on an otherworldly journey.

The Painted Hall, aka ‘Britain’s Sistine Chapel,’ is a fitting space to showcase Jerram’s installation. The Baroque murals, painted by Sir James Thornhill in the early 18th century, depict monarchs, allegorical figures, and celestial beings celebrating Britain’s naval power. Mars feels perfectly at home here, echoing the Hall’s themes of exploration and ambition while adding a distinctly modern twist.

The Old Royal Naval College has also put together a programme of events set against the backdrop of the installation. Calming sound baths and yoga sessions are held directly beneath the glowing sculpture. The ‘Lie Down and Listen’ sonic journey provides a chance to stretch out in the Painted Hall and become lost in the sounds and atmosphere inspired by the installation.

One notable omission, however, is the lack of detail about how the installation was crafted. While it’s clear that Mars has caught visitors’ imaginations, there is little mention of the materials or methods behind its creation. Despite this minor shortfall, the installation’s overall impact is undeniable.

Running from 23rd November 2024 to 20th January 2025, with tickets priced at £16.50, this is one London event that should be on everyone’s radar.
