Lavender Hill Police front counter to stay open
The Lavender Hill Police Station’s front counter will remain open, following public consultation over the Metropolitan Police’s plans to reduce the number of 24-hour front counters across the capital.
The decision to keep Lavender Hill Police Station open has been “welcomed” by Wandsworth Council, which had “previously raised strong objections” to any closure of the counter there, warning that it “would leave the borough without a single full-time public access point to the police.”
“This is good news for Wandsworth,” Graeme Henderson, Cabinet Member for Health, said. “We’ve been clear from the start that our borough must not lose its front counter. Lavender Hill plays a vital role in keeping our community safe and making sure residents can speak to an officer face to face. We’ll continue working closely with the Met to ensure this commitment is kept and that local policing remains visible, accessible, and properly supported.”
New mobile CCTV vans have recently been launched in Wandsworth, allowing the borough to be “more proactive, responsive and visible, ensuring our residents feel safe in their communities.” They are an addition to its network of over 1,200 CCTV cameras, one of the largest networks in the nation, supporting police “in catching and deterring crime and keeping you safe,” according to a press release from the council.
“Sound financial management is at the heart of everything we do,” it said. “The new CCTV cars are paid for from funds the council collects from property developers to benefit the local area without adding a penny to your council tax. This extra investment marks a significant step forward in our commitment to keeping Wandsworth safe.”
