Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter Reunite on Broadway in the most excellent ‘Waiting for Godot’
In a surprising twist that has delighted theatre enthusiasts and movie fans alike, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, the beloved stars of the Bill and Ted films, are set to reunite on Broadway. They will be taking on one of the most iconic plays of the 20th century, Samuel Beckett’s ‘Waiting for Godot.’
At first, many thought this announcement might be an April Fool’s joke, but it’s been confirmed: Hollywood heavyweight Keanu Reeves, famed for his roles in the ‘John Wick’ and ‘The Matrix’ series, will make his Broadway debut as Estragon. His long-time friend and co-star Alex Winter, who first appeared on Broadway as a child in 1979, will play Vladimir. This dynamic duo, who have shared a close bond since filming ‘Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure’ 35 years ago, expressed their enthusiasm in a joint statement: “We’re incredibly excited to be on stage together and work with the great Jamie Lloyd in one of our favorite plays.”
Directed by the renowned Jamie Lloyd, whose recent London hits include ‘Romeo and Juliet’ with Tom Holland and ‘Sunset Boulevard’ with Nicole Scherzinger, this production is set to open in the autumn of 2025 in a yet-to-be-named Broadway theatre. Lloyd shared his excitement about the collaboration, saying, “It is a real honour to be collaborating with the brilliant Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter on Samuel Beckett’s sublime masterpiece — one of the greatest plays of all time.”
Before this much-anticipated Broadway debut, the UK will also enjoy a star-studded revival of ‘Waiting for Godot.’ Ben Whishaw and Lucien Msmati are set to bring their talents to the Theatre Royal Haymarket starting this September.
Fans of the ‘Bill and Ted’ series, known for its memorable catchphrases like “party on, dudes” and “be excellent to each other,” last saw Reeves and Winter reprising their roles in the 2020 film ‘Bill & Ted Face the Music.’ The upcoming Broadway production is sure to be a treat for those who have followed their comedic and cinematic journey over the decades.
