Jeremy Deller’s bicentenary celebration to shine in Trafalgar Square
As part of the National Gallery’s Bicentenary celebrations, renowned British artist Jeremy Deller has been commissioned to create a groundbreaking, UK-wide celebration. Taking place in 2025, this event promises to be the largest of its kind, featuring festivals, exhibitions, and public art displays across Northern Ireland, England, Wales, and Scotland. Deller, a Turner Prize winner, has designed a series of artistic experiences aimed at engaging the public in a vibrant celebration of culture and creativity.
Throughout the UK, hundreds of participants will join in on a mix of activities, from raves and parades to tea parties, lido swims, and performances. One of the highlights of the celebration will be new banners created by Deller’s long-time collaborator, Ed Hall. Additionally, a unique exhibition of Deller’s works, alongside pieces by emerging artists, will be displayed as part of the festivities.
The culmination of the Bicentenary celebrations will take place on Saturday, 26th July 2025, in Trafalgar Square. The day will begin with a lively procession along Whitehall, leading to the square where visitors can enjoy a full range of interactive art experiences, from dancing and cake-eating to performances that reflect the National Gallery’s historic collection. It promises to be a day of art, culture, and community for Londoners and visitors alike.
