Homes for Wandsworth completes 500th home
Wandsworth Council has built the 500th home as part of its Homes for Wandsworth programme, marking the halfway point in its pledge to build 1,000 “high-quality” council homes for local residents and workers. The latest four-storey development is at Putney Vale and offers 14 new 1, 2, and 3 bedroom homes at council rent, with priority for those with roots in the community through a dedicated Local Lettings Plan.
The scheme also includes a “range of environmental and community enhancements,” including a secure bicycle storage facility, additional parking spaces, a new children’s play area, and landscaping improvements to “uplift the surrounding area.”
“The 500th home completed as part of the Homes for Wandsworth programme is an incredible milestone,” Aydin Dikerdem, Cabinet Member for Housing, said. “This brings us closer to our goal of completing 1,000 homes and continuing to help local families make moves that are improving their happiness and wellbeing. I look forward to seeing the first residents move in and thrive with their families for years to come.”
Homes for Wandsworth is “on track,” the council says, to build over 1,000 new homes by 2029, with new developments at Randall Close and Patmore Street adding a further 163 homes for council rent.
“Homes for Wandsworth is one of London’s most ambitious council homebuilding initiatives, designed to tackle housing shortages and support thriving, inclusive communities,” the council says. “Each new home represents a family moved off waiting lists and into secure, comfortable tenancies.”
The programme, it added, is “about more than bricks and mortar,” as “with every development, Wandsworth is investing in the future of its neighbourhoods,” with “vibrant spaces, enhancing green areas, and building facilities that foster connection and wellbeing.”
“As the programme continues toward its 1,000-home goal, Wandsworth remains committed to ensuring that every resident has the opportunity to live well, stay local, and build a life in the borough they call home,” it added.
