Hammersmith and Fulham Residents Lead the Way in Housing Improvements

Johaan, a long-time White City Estate resident, has lived in Hammersmith & Fulham (H&F) for 30 years and is determined to make the borough a better place for its residents. As Chair of the resident-led Housing and Estates Working Group, Johaan works closely with the council to improve housing services. “I’m proud to be part of this group. It’s a chance to make sure residents are getting the best service and value for money,” Johaan said. The Hammersmith and Fulham residents group provides residents with a platform to voice their concerns and ensures that the council takes the necessary steps to enhance housing services.
Johaan’s dedication stems from a family legacy. His father, John, was a respected member of the Tenant and Resident Association (TRA) for White City Estate. “My father was the voice of the community and a well-known figure locally. When he passed away, I was invited to join the TRA and continue his work,” Johaan explained.

Over the past three years, Johaan has chaired the Housing and Estates Working Group, which collaborates with the council on various initiatives, including contractor procurement and tackling anti-social behaviour. These efforts have led to significant improvements in housing services, such as better cleaning and maintenance and updated estate noticeboards for easier access to vital information.
H&F Cabinet Member for Housing and Homelessness, Cllr Frances Umeh, praised Johaan’s contributions, stating, “Johaan has been instrumental in driving resident-led improvements. Just like his father, he ensures our estates and housing services are well-run, benefiting the entire community.”
Johaan remains committed to fostering collaboration between residents and council teams. “We’ve worked with multiple council departments to ensure the best outcomes for residents,” he said. “This partnership has made a real difference, and we will continue to bring the necessary improvements.”
