Garnacho awarded Puskas award for goal against Everton

Manchester United and Argentina player Alejandro Garnacho has become the latest recipient of the FIFA Puskas Award, the trophy given to the player who scores the best goal in a season. Previous winners have included Zlatan Ibrahimovic against England, James Rodriguez, the only player to win it for a goal at the World Cup, and Neymar when he was at Santos.

The acrobatic kick by Garnacho at Goodison Park against Everton was chosen as the best goal by a male player between 21st August, 2023 and the 10th August, 2024. After being nominated, along with 10 other, the Argentine received the most votes from fans and a panel of experts.

The award is named after Hungary and Real Madrid legend Ferenc Puskas, renowned for his outstanding individual goals and considered by many to be one of the best players of the 1950s, helping Hungary reach a World Cup final in 1954.

Garnacho now becomes the sixth to win it for a goal in the Premier League, joining Olivier Giroud , Mohamed Salah , Son Heung-Min and Erik Lamela.

He is also the second Manchester United player to receive it. Cristiano Ronaldo was the first ever recipient of the award in 2009 after a strike against Porto in the Champions League in 2009. Which made it only fitting that Garnacho performed Ronaldo’s signature ‘siu’ celebration after his goal against Everton.
