Anticipation Soars for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ as New Images Ignite Fan Excitement

Shawn Levy, no stranger to rumours from his “Stranger Things” days, finds himself astonished by the buzz surrounding “Deadpool & Wolverine.” “The rumours around this movie are overwhelming,” he shared earlier this year with Associated Press. “But so is the anticipation, which is a nice situation.”

Calling it “anticipation” might be an understatement. The film is set to be the summer’s theatrical event when it opens this Thursday. The first trailer, which aired during the Super Bowl, racked up a record 365 million views in just 24 hours. The second trailer broke another record with the most “F-bombs” in the MCU – six in under three minutes.

The excitement is largely because this film marks the first time Ryan Reynolds‘ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Previously, these characters were under the 21st Century Fox banner. When Disney acquired Fox’s assets in 2019, Wolverine had already died in “Logan,” a third “Deadpool” was in development, and Marvel was still sticking to PG-13 ratings.

During the acquisition, Disney’s CEO Bob Iger assured that a Disney Deadpool would remain R-rated. Reynolds even posted a cheeky photo of his character in Mickey Mouse ears, signalling that the meta humour was intact.

However, what would the story be? Levy, announced as director in early 2022, is a fan of Reynolds’ snarky tone. “There was no way I was going to reinvent a wheel that works so beautifully,” Levy said. “Both Disney and Marvel empowered Ryan and me to make this movie exactly as we dreamed.”

Things really took off when Jackman signed on in the autumn of 2022. This film marks the first on-screen reunion of Deadpool and Wolverine since 2009’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” The duo’s real-life friendship, often played out in a comedic “feud” on social media, added to the film’s appeal.

Though “Logan” seemed to be Jackman’s farewell to the character, the multiverse offers endless possibilities. Levy assured fans that this film wouldn’t interfere with “Logan’s” storyline. “It’s a really interesting duo,” Levy said. “They’re so different, which makes for a very interesting story. The best two-hander stories are filled with conflict but ultimately about something more.”

Levy, Jackman, and Reynolds’ decade-long friendship also influenced the film. “Being friends off set allows for trying crazy stuff without fear of failing,” Levy said. “This movie is filled with moments we didn’t expect, born from that freedom.”

At the New York premiere, Jackman and Reynolds praised each other sincerely. “Ryan is an extraordinary man, generous, humble, brilliant, and a great friend,” Jackman said. Reynolds echoed the sentiment, highlighting Jackman’s kindness and hard work.

For casual Marvel fans, the multiverse has become overwhelming. Levy promises that “Deadpool & Wolverine” doesn’t require homework. “I didn’t want to presume prior research. This movie is built for entertainment,” Levy said.

As for the plot? Levy remained tight-lipped. Until the premiere, reporters had only seen 40 minutes of the film. But the excitement didn’t need plot teasers. Fans are already eager, regardless of the social media spoilers to come.

Marvel’s recent Phase 5 has had its ups and downs, but “Deadpool & Wolverine” is generating significant buzz. Early reviews are positive, with AP’s Krysta Fauria noting the film’s commitment to its genre, despite some aimless moments toward the end. The final fight scene, she says, perks viewers up, solidifying its identity as a fun summer movie.

The film could be the first MCU movie since “Spider-Man: No Way Home” to crack $1 billion, potentially becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. It’s currently tracking to open around $160 million, with some forecasts as high as $200 million.

“Audiences are hungry for a great time at the movies,” Levy said. “They want to be delighted, transported, and entertained. And when they are, they show up.”

Levy concluded, “The movie is built for audience delight. I think they’re in for a very fun ride.”
