Cycling network with new routes and initiatives in Westminster
Westminster City Council says that it is committed to expanding and enhancing its cycling network across the city, making it easier for residents and visitors to enjoy an eco-friendly, healthy way of getting around. Cycling in the borough is a fast, efficient, and environmentally friendly mode of transport. The council is working to make it as accessible as possible by improving infrastructure and offering support to cyclists.
Progress is being made on three new cycleways—C40, C43, and C51—scheduled for completion by 2026. These routes will pass through central Westminster, and while planning has been challenging, the council is actively consulting with residents, businesses, and cyclists to ensure safe and practical routes. Feedback from these consultations has led to adjustments to meet the needs of all.
Additional cycle routes are also in development, including on Abingdon Street, Bayswater Road, Portland Place, and Buckingham Palace Road, with construction set to begin on Harrow Road, Queensway, and Lupus Street in 2024.
Recent improvements include installing 55 new cycling stands, 346 parking spaces for hire e-bikes, and 235 secure cycle hangars for residents. A cargo bike hangar and new Santander hire bike stations have also been added along the Harrow Road corridor.
Beyond infrastructure, the council supports various cycling initiatives to help expand the borough’s cycling network. These include the Ford RideLondon festival, cycle training programs, and a cargo bike rental scheme. Westminster is also involved in the London-wide Zero Emissions Network and promotes the Vision Zero ambition to eliminate traffic-related fatalities.
In addition to infrastructure upgrades, Westminster City Council is also launching several community outreach programs aimed at making cycling more inclusive. Initiatives such as the ‘Joy Riders’ for women, ‘The Bike Project,’ and the ‘Cycle Sisters’ group for the global majority are now receiving council support. A new Westminster Cycle Loan scheme is set to launch this autumn, offering affordable access to bikes. These efforts are part of a broader commitment to London’s Vision Zero ambition, aiming to eliminate all serious collisions and make cycling safer for everyone in the city.
With continued investment, the council says it is proud to see more cyclists on its streets and remains dedicated to creating a safe and accessible cycling environment for all.
