Cruise Control warning lights not understood by 41% of drivers

A new survey from Warrantywise has found that basic cruise control warning lights are not understood by almost half of UK drivers. This, it said, “raises serious concerns about the real-world impact of increasingly complex car technology and self-driving ADAS systems.”

The cruise control warning lights can range from alerts for lane assist to adaptive cruise control. The symbols on many vehicles’ dashboards, it added, “appear to be causing more confusion than confidence” as a 41% of drivers admit that they do not recognise or understand a single warning light from among the basic cruise control related warnings.

“In a world where cars can steer, brake and park themselves, many drivers are left struggling with what should be the most basic line of communication from their car: the dashboard,” Warrantywise said. “When that confusion leads to hesitation or inaction, it can have real consequences, not just for road safety, but also for repair costs.

The findings, it added, are reflective of a broader concern in the industry over ‘tech overload,’ where increasingly complicated digital systems can cause barriers rather than benefits. One study found that 61% of drivers do not regularly utilise a vehicle’s advanced features, while nearly a quarter switch off many basic driver-assist functions entirely. Confusion and distraction were cited as the main reason for doing so.
