Club World Cup kicks off in America
The expanded FIFA Club World Cup has kicked off in the USA, including Manchester City and Chelsea from the Premier League, as well as Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami. The new-look competition with 32 teams began on 14th June, the final set to be on 13th July.
Manchester City are drawn in a group with Italian giants Juventus, Morron side Wydad AC, and UAE club Al Ain. Chelsea, the other Premier League team in the Club World Cup will go against Brazilian side Flamengo, Esperance Sportive de Tunis from Tunisia and Los Angeles FC.
Messi’s Inter Miami failed to gain three points against Egyptian club Al Ahly, with the match ending goalless. Paris Saint Germain and Botofogo from Brazil both ended up with victories, the former beating Atletico Madrid 4-0, and the latter 2-1 over Seattle Sounders.
Argentina’s Boca Juniors ended up with a 2-2 draw with Portuguese side Benfica while Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich thrashed Auckland FC 10-0. This has set a new record for a FIFA sanctioned competition.
Chelsea overcame Los Angeles FC to earn a 2-0 win while Flamengo defeated Esperance Sportive de Tunis by the same scoreline.
Historically, Brazilian clubs have performed well at the Club World Cup, though Real Madrid are the record champions with 5 wins. Manchester are the current reigning victors and Guardiola’s side will hope to retain their trophy.
