Chinese nationals banned from NASA space research

NASA has banned Chinese nationals with valid US visas from its facilities. Those who previously could only work as contractors or students contributing to research discovered on 5th September that they have lost all access to the space agency’s systems and facilities, according to Bloomberg.

NASA confirmed this, saying that Chinese nationals will be restricted from its “facilities, materials and networks to ensure the security of our work.”

The accelerated space programme of China shocked the USA, resulting in an intensified space race between the two nations. Astronauts from China are already prevented from using the International Space Station (ISS) as America bars NASA from sharing its data with Beijing.

The latest restriction from NASA is a further blow in scientific collaboration between the two as a result of concerns over national security. Both countries are increasingly cautious of one another as they compete to become more technologically advanced.

Chinese students, especially those in science, technology, engineering, or maths (STEM) will find it harder to get visas or even enter the USA if they have secured one. A number of Chinese nationals, including scientists in particular, have been scrutinised over alleged espionage.

It is not known, the BBC reports, how much notice the Chinese nationals working for NASA had been given. Bloomberg reports that they discovered the news suddenly, learning that they had lost access to the agency’s data systems and were prevented from taking part in meetings relating to their work, including in-person and virtual.

NASA had taken “internal action pertaining to Chinese nationals, including restricting physical and cybersecurity access to our facilities,” NASA’s press secretary Bethany Stevens told reporters.
