Bruno Fernandes has turned down a major offer from Saudi club Al Hilal, choosing to stay put at Manchester United. Despite interest that included a reported £100 million bid and the promise of tripling his current wages, the United captain has decided his future, at least for now, lies in the Premier League.
The midfielder, now 30, discussed the offer with his family, but ultimately chose not to make the move. His decision, by all accounts, was as much about football as it was personal. There’s still a sense that Bruno Fernandes has more to offer at the top level in Europe, and that his time at Old Trafford isn’t finished yet.
It’s a call that will come as a relief to many United supporters, particularly after a season that raised more questions than answers. Fernandes has been one of the few steady figures at the club since joining from Sporting Lisbon in 2020. His goals, assists, and visible frustration in difficult matches speak volumes about his standards and his influence.
With a contract running until 2027, plus an option for a further year, Manchester United were under no pressure to sell. But the interest from Saudi Arabia was genuine, and the numbers were eye-watering. The fact Fernandes turned it down quietly strengthens his role as a player still fully focused on club football at the highest level.
Manager Ruben Amorim has hinted in recent weeks that Fernandes had no plans to leave. After a pre-season match in Asia, he suggested that conversations between the two had given him confidence the midfielder would stay. And he was right.
The club’s summer plans remain active. Talks are expected to begin soon with Brentford over a move for forward Bryan Mbeumo. United have admired the player for some time and believe he fits well into Amorim’s evolving system. Brentford are open to offers if the price is right, reportedly north of £60 million.
This isn’t the first time players have turned down the Saudi league, but Fernandes doing so at this point in his career suggests he still sees himself in the thick of European football, not on the periphery. For United fans, it’s another reason to believe the captain’s head is in the right place and that he’s still aiming to lift something meaningful in a red shirt.
