Maureen Lipman Steals the Show in Richmond’s Dazzling Panto Delight!

The epithet of National Treasure is overused in today’s world. However, it is entirely fitting when describing the incomparable and talented polymath that is Dame Maureen Lipman. From the dizzying heights of Coronation Street to her work as an author, satirist, and actress, she has left an indelible mark. Who can forget her breathtaking stage presence, bringing Joyce Grenfell back to life? The Dame that is Maureen sparkles once again in this traditional, joyful pantomime at the wonderful Richmond Theatre. She alone is worth the price of admission.

The director of this traditional romp, Paul Robinson, has created a visual spectacular, enhanced by topical jokes that sparkle, covering everything from Starmer to Trump, with a few barbs aimed at the locals in Richmond. The costumes are vivid and spectacular, in that quintessential sweatshop style that perfectly complements the story of Beauty and the Beast. Songs pump out for the teens, with hits from Beyoncé and Ed Sheeran.

Lipman is the perfect star as Miss Polly, connecting directly with the audience through asides and impromptu performances that are a joy to watch from a consummate pro. Watch out for the verbal fireworks in the second act—a genuinely hilarious tongue twister. Adding to this effervescent duel is the cheeky Peter Ferman as Silly Billy, who picks up the mantle of music hall and modernises it with genuine on-stage magic tricks, even inviting victims onstage. If there were an Oscar for Cheeky Chappy, Silly Billy would win it hands down.

The obligatory drag act is filled with Julian Clary-esque energy, brought to life by Ben Stock as Dame Betty Bouffant. Meanwhile, all the “boos” are wonderfully scooped up by Jason Leigh Winter as Flash Harry, a real-life muscle mountain delighting the Mums. Last but not least, there’s an almost impossibly perfect and beautiful Belle who can sing, dancing with a Beast that transcends and then transforms under the power of true love—a message we could all use at this time of year, especially with our present government. Maureen may have mentioned it once or twice.
