Beach of Dreams UK art festival turns coastlines into open-air galleries
UK beaches have been reimagined as spaces for art, reflection, and storytelling this summer through the Beach of Dreams UK art festival, which ran from 1st May to 1st June. From Tilbury in Essex to Great Yarmouth and Findhorn in Scotland, this month-long celebration brought together artists and local communities to create a shared portrait of the British coastline, with climate and community at its heart.
The festival began on a stretch of the Thames Estuary known as the “beach of broken dreams”, a tide-washed foreshore marked by layers of human history, and ended with vibrant public installations and performances on beaches across the country. Along the way, Beach of Dreams UK art festival delivered eight newly commissioned works, each exploring our evolving relationship with the coast through sculpture, sound, and silk.
Among the standout moments was a 100-metre tidal sculpture in Fife co-created by artist Julie Brooks and local volunteers, designed to appear and vanish with the sea. In South Tyneside, a photo installation spotlighted marine habitats that often go unnoticed. Over in Colwyn Bay, coastal sounds were captured and turned into a kind of “sonic treasure hunt,” where walkers were invited to tune into their surroundings through soundscapes embedded in the landscape.
A central thread through the entire Beach of Dreams UK art festival was a national artwork made from 838 silk pennants, each hand-dyed using natural materials and inspired by the maker’s personal connection to the sea. In Findhorn, over 50 participants took part in creative workshops to make their pieces, guided by artists and local educators. These flags, adorned with batik patterns and coastal motifs, were then carried in a procession from Burghead to Findhorn beach in a moving final act of shared storytelling. One participant reflected, “The ocean reminds me that everything is always in change. I breathe in. I breathe out.”
Although the main programme has ended, the Beach of Dreams journey continues this September with a large-scale visual performance on Weymouth beach, presented as part of the Inside Out Dorset festival. Weymouth beach will host an immersive art performance that blends dance, ritual, and visual storytelling to celebrate the coast as a space of transformation. It’s designed not just as a performance, but as a shared gathering, where the beach itself becomes the stage for reflection and imagination.
For those who missed the earlier events, the upcoming September performance offers a chance to experience the themes of the Beach of Dreams UK art festival in a fresh light – with sand underfoot and the sea in view.
