Anti-Social behaviour to be tackled with more inspectors and CCTV

Westminster City Council is stepping up its efforts to tackle anti-social behaviour with the recruitment of additional City Inspectors and a significant expansion of CCTV coverage across the city. As part of newly approved budget proposals, eight new City Inspectors will be hired to work alongside police officers, focusing solely on combating anti-social behaviour. This move is a key element in the council’s broader strategy to enhance community safety and address concerns raised by residents.
A major investment in CCTV will see the number of cameras on Westminster’s streets double to 200, with 40 new cameras specifically deployed in the West End, targeting hotspots such as Soho and Leicester Square. This initiative forms part of a wider £2 million investment aimed at improving city management and tackling anti-social behaviour.
The latest CCTV roll-out represents Westminster’s most significant security investment in nearly a decade. The initiative has already proven effective, with footage being used as police evidence in criminal cases.
Beyond crime prevention, the newly approved budget allocates funds to several other key areas. An additional £140 million will go towards purchasing temporary accommodation to ease the pressure on the city’s housing waiting list. Meanwhile, £2.6 million will be invested in adult social care, ensuring hundreds of residents receive free care while increasing wages for care assistants.
Despite these substantial investments, Council Tax will rise by just 48p per week for a Band D property, keeping Westminster’s rates among the lowest in the country. The council will also allocate extra funding to support rough sleepers, increase pay for personal care assistants, and provide cost-of-living relief through initiatives such as free school meals and hardship funds.
Cllr Adam Hug, leader of Westminster City Council, emphasised the importance of these measures, stating: “Wherever you live in Westminster, you should feel safe from anti-social behaviour. Our redeployable cameras are already aiding prosecutions, and we will continue to prioritise safety and community well-being.”
