10 by 10 Programme: Free activities for Westminster children

Westminster City Council has launched the ’10 by 10′ programme, a groundbreaking initiative designed to give children the chance to take part in ten enriching activities before they turn ten years old. The programme, part of the council’s Fairer Westminster strategy, ensures children across the borough can explore new talents, build life skills, and enjoy the cultural and recreational offerings of Westminster, regardless of their financial background.

Working with schools and local organisations, the council has curated a diverse range of free and low-cost activities, making it easier for children to get involved. From learning to swim to playing a musical instrument, the ’10 by 10′ programme encourages participation in experiences that can shape a child’s development and boost their confidence.

Among the standout activities, children can access free swimming sessions at Westminster’s leisure centres using the ActiveWestminster Discount Card. Budding athletes can engage in competitive team sports, while aspiring artists and performers can attend drama workshops or see live theatre productions. Additionally, young Londoners will have the chance to explore Westminster’s rich cultural heritage by visiting iconic museums such as the National Portrait Gallery, Tate Britain, and the Cartoon Museum.

Outdoor activities also play a crucial role in ’10 by 10′. The programme encourages children to visit the seaside and countryside, take part in camping trips, and even learn to ride a bike. For those interested in developing critical thinking and communication skills, debating opportunities are available, while book lovers are encouraged to register with a library and use it regularly.

Councillor Aicha Less, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, emphasised the importance of inclusivity in the initiative: “All children deserve equal access to enriching activities, and the ‘10 by 10’ campaign removes barriers that often prevent them from taking part. Throughout the process we have kept affordability for families in mind – with all activities being offered for free or at a low cost so no child misses out. I encourage parents, carers and guardians to get their children involved to empower them with new knowledge, experiences, and confidence. ”

The initiative is an exciting addition to Westminster’s outstanding-rated children’s services, which already support families through Family Hubs and specialised programmes for children with disabilities, such as the Tresham Centres.
