Zip wire attraction coming to Lake District

The Lake District is set to get a new attraction as plans for a zip wire spanning over a kilometre have been approved. The attraction will connect Honister Crag and the Honister Slate Mine Visitor Centre. It was initially approved by the park’s authority in 2019 but plans have been resubmitted after a landing post has been moved.

Honister Slate Mine, the oldest working slate mine in England, is the source of roof slate for both Kensington and Buckingham Palace.

Amendments to the zip wire plans included changes to the landing points for passengers, an updated technology braking system, and the removal of an intermediate post. The plans have been approved unanimously by the Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA) members.

Conditions have been added by committee members to the application. It stated that the infrastructure should be removed if it is no longer required. It also said that the zip wire could only be used between 8:00 and 18:30.

“To allow our businesses to sustain, grow and flourish we need to allow them to continue to evolve their businesses,” LDNPA member Jim Jackson told the committee. He expressed concern that the proposed attraction could impact on the “tranquillity” of the  higher fells, adding that he was “conscious” that there are other fells to find “peace and quiet.”

According to planning documents, a maximum of 57 people would use the zip wire every day. Those with restricted mobility, as well as children under the age of 10, could access the facility with a powered cable climbing trolley.

Buttermere Parish Council and Friends of the Lake District have voiced their objections to the plans. The latter said that, despite clarifications by the applicant, the proposal “nevertheless remains of concern primarily due to conflicts with the statutory purpose of National Parks” and local and national planning policy.
